“Creativity is not the finding of a thing, but the making something out of it after it is found.” —James Russell Lowell My love of encaustic painting, my passion for wax: IT WAS MEANT TO BEE! Years ago, after the cold of winter settled in, I started collecting the abandoned paper hives of hornets I marvel at the simple elegance of the works created by these hornets and tenderly hang them from beams within our great room and now in my studio. I truly believe that there is a connection between this process of gathering hives and my passion for encaustic painting. Encaustic paint and medium is a mixture of beeswax and damar resin. The process is one of painting layer upon layer of wax and fusing each layer with heat. The encaustic medium has a mild, intoxicating smell that, when warm, adds to the mystery and appeal of the wax. The painting process demands patience, which I normally lack. But when lost in the process, I am patient and tenacious. Hopefully this new found attribute will carry over into the rest of my life! On one of our annual art tours, I visited the studio of encaustic artist Kathryn Lesoine, She graciously invited me to her studio the following week to see if encaustic painting would support the incorporation of my collection of natural and reclaimed objects into my art. The rest is history. Upon returning to my farm, I ordered start-up supplies. My interest in encaustics rapidly became a healthy obsession. My thanks go to Kathryn for starting something so very wonderful.
“In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks”. —John Muir My Studio Process My process for creating encaustic art begins with exploration. These journeys begin with the routine practice of walking around on and near our farm. I try to walk as often as possible, in woods and fields, along streams, and over dirt roads. I delight in the opportunities these provide me, while I pay particular attention to my natural surroundings. These daily excursions are meditative, providing time for reflecting and infusing peace within. I capitalize on my wanderings to gather unique, beautiful, and special items that I incorporate into my art. I collect flowers, plant life, wood, old fence wire, rusted metal, and stones - basically anything that catches my eye as part of the incredible natural environment that I happily call home. Once back to my studio, I gently store the objects for possible future use in my encaustic work.
