Lee 310 - Solitude
‘Solitude’ was created with a wood panel foundation upon which two different papers were added. Multiple pieces of bark from our dying ash trees were attached with many layers of encaustic medium. Wax oil sticks were used to add color. The ‘flowers’ from ornamental grass were then dipped into encaustic medium were added to complete the work.

Rusted metal and rusty old fence staples were salvaged when we cleaned up an old garbage dump on our farm and are now incorporated into this encaustic mixed media work. Recycled plastic mesh was melted with a torch into the encaustic medium and a few antique cut nails were added to complete this work in honor of “Cleaning Up the Farm Day”.

This work consists of salvaged part of a brake shield, the comb and paper from the hive of white faced hornets on a wood panel covered in encaustic medium and oil pigment sticks. I picked up the brake shield on my early morning walk one autumn day, ironically on Bendix Road outside of South Montrose, PA just past the sit of the former Bendix manufacturing plant. Researching the part number on the broken brake shield, it was manufactured by Bendix Corporation (not the South Montrose site) for a front axle for Ford, GM, and Chrysler in 1998 ….another amazing coincidence!

Love and Laugh are the messages in this series of three “Woodland Fairies”. Reclaimed barn boards from a decrepit barn when we bought our property were rescued years ago to serve as the foundations of this series. The smaller pieces of wood were provided by a friend and stained with inks. Repurposed paper was stained in coordinating colors while bark, dried ferns, dried flowers, and salvaged metal pieces were incorporated. The fairies are rusty metal, providing magic in the woodlot.

This Mexican blanket is encaustic medium on a reclaimed barn door of a goat barn. Each of the four panels utilizes a different encaustic technique. The top panel began with burned wood glue and India and distressed inks and encaustic medium. The second panel has a strip of wood-burned stars and stenciled spots from tree-pruning asphalt covered with encaustic medium and inks. Panel three is vertical strips of black sand, chicken feathers, inks, and encaustic medium. The fourth panel has horizontal strips of leather and string embedded in the encaustic medium and painted with inks.

Rescued plywoods from a multi-generation family business are the foundation of this work. The wood of the front panel is naturally eroded by years of wear in the manufacturing of bulk fertilizers, creating a truly unique design. This grain of this face layer is running vertically, to signify the wood’s erosion that occurred during this long standing family business. The wood in the back panel, with the grain running horizontally, represents the strengths of the enduring business. Black India ink is used for the background, and cast iron corners complete the piece. “Brotherhood” is dedicated to the family members who committed hard work and strength to maintain a business, serving the community for over a hundred years.

Lee 22 The Farmer of Johnson Pond

This large work begins with a rescued wood panel from a renovation project in my home at Johnson Pond. The background is painted with acrylic with an addition of raffia. The farmer is constructed from reclaimed plywood which is covered in burlap. Then, Japanese paper covers the burlap and is stained with India inks. Wire-covered moss, an antique hay fork, and an old cast iron star complete the farmer.

An antique buck saw is the frame of “Lumbermen’s Flowers.” A rescued piece of old plywood is coated in textured paste where antique cut nails and old tacks becoming the flowers. Sawdust, sand, and tiny art stones are embedded to add additional texture. The work is a tribute to all of the lumbermen who contributed to our Pennsylvania history.

Norway Maple is set on a slab of reclaimed hemlock board painted with acrylic paints. Pieces of Fraser Fir pine cones, the seeds of a Norway maple, and the stems of an unknown plant make up this work. The pine cones of the Fraser Fir do not remain intact upon drying, and sometimes the pieces resemble flowers. These pine cones are embedded in a textured paste.

The foundation of Silent Night is a piece of ash tree bark. Our great ash trees are succumbing to the emerald ash borer, and so far we have harvested 90 of the beautiful trees due to this attack. This work is one of my tributes to this magnificent tree’s going the way of the once great American Chestnut tree. The background of Silent Night is India ink with the addition of small stones, white sand, the ‘stems’ from Fraser Fir pine cones and raw wool fibers encased in encaustic medium.

Most of the wood that I use is salvaged from a friend’s small lumberyard. This encaustic mixed media work is created on a thin slab of a hemlock trunk. The encaustic medium is layered with stone, extra course sandpaper, and various colors of sand. Collected tree bark provides additional interest, and all is covered with encaustic medium.

Lee 01 Young Buck

In late winter or early spring, buck deer shed their antlers. This piece incorporates one such shed that I found while walking in our woodlot. The foundation of the work is a reclaimed hemlock board. This antler of a young buck is attached with coated wire. Dried ferns, India ink, and a black chain complete the piece.
